Self-Care Pt.3 – Invest in Yourself Before You Wreck Yo’ Self

I always thought I loved myself…until one day I realized how little I invested into ME.

If someone needed help with an idea they had, I’d spend hours researching, watching YouTube videos & reading articles on how to make it happen.

I’d push, encourage and motivate them to do it, stretching the fibers of my brain with innovative methods of ways to reach their goal.

But when it came to my ideas, my dreams or goals…I was chillin’. I was investing into everyone else’s purpose but my own.

Well I guess I could blame it on being naturally wired to help others and advise them on what to do with their lives. I mean, “God, You made me this way so it’s not my fault I’m running around chasing other’s dreams, right?”

The gifts, talents and skills God gave us are not just here for the benefit of others, they should also be benefiting you. The definition of benefit is something that is advantageous or good. Advantageous is defined as “involving or creating favorable circumstances that increase the chances of success or effectiveness”.

Your gifts, talents and skills should create favorable circumstances that increase your chances of success!!!

This year, I decided that I was going to be a little more selfish. I remember telling my mom and she looked at me like I was crazy, because I guess it does sound crazy lol. Who says they want to be selfish?? But my sister knew exactly what I meant by saying that. I give and give and give and while I help you become the next Michael Jackson, I’m here, the fifth-cousin removed by marriage that no one has even heard of. No Bueno.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life. (Proberbs 13:12 NLT)

An important part of self-care is fulfilling those dreams and purposes that are inside of you. When you feel fulfilled, you’re happier, you have a reason to live, you’re optimistic and you can help those around you better. If a dream fulfilled is a tree of life, then is it safe to say that a dream unfulfilled is a dried-up, withered, crusty tree? I don’t know about you but I want to be a tree of life!

Here are 5 Ways to Improve Your Self-Care by Investing in Yourself!

  1. Gain Knowledge

Research, study, Google, YouTube, practice whatever it is you want to work on. We live in the information age. There are no excuses to not become knowledgeable about your dream.

  1. Glean from Others

Glean means to extract from various sources. Extract what you need from those around you. If someone is really good at organization or web design, seek them out and glean what you need. Ask for help! It’s ok.

  1. Give Yourself Time

Rome was not built in one day. You cannot get your Ph. D in a week. You cannot become the next makeup guru in a month. Give yourself time.

  1. Generate Results

Produce something. You shouldn’t be sitting around saying, “Well Christine said to give myself time, so I’m just giving myself more time to produce something. All my ideas are in my head so I’m just waiting.” Uh excuse me, but you’ve been waiting since 1925. Get a move on it!

  1. Get some R&R

I mentioned in Part 1 of this Self-Care series that you need to give yourself a break! Invest in yourself by giving yourself some REAL rest & relaxation. Go to the beach, plan a staycation, turn your phone off and have a movie day. Do something where you disconnect and recharge. You’ll return refreshed and rejuvenated, ready to fulfill purpose.

  1. This was me all the way!

But I learned my lesson quick. Really quick.
That’s why I tread lightly with how and who I invest my time in. If I have to work harder than you, then I know it’s not worth it. Because then it takes away from my craft

I love these tips! I love this post, and I love you! Great job sister 🌻

  2. This is a well needed post! Thank you for sharing babe❤️

As I’ve mentioned before, I was the person who’d constantly water someone else’s dreams, ideas, and goals, as mine sat on the back-burner 😩

It wasn’t until I finally realized that nothing was floriishing on my lane, that I began to invest into Widny.

    And now, I’m woke! 🙅🏾

  3. Girllllllllllll !!!!. I would give, give & give some more and put myself in the back seat and I always wonder why I do that to myself. I learned you’re hurting yourself more than being a kind person cause it’s nice to help others and rooting for others but, what about yourself? I use to think that if you put yourself first, you’ll be consider as selfish but, I don’t believe that. I feel like people abuse the word “selfish” too much because sounds like everything is “selfish” . When you’re putting yourself first and taking care of yourself, it’s helping you mentally, physically & spiritually. That’s why as I’m rooting for others and supporting others, I make sure I’m rooting for myself. You have to be your biggest supporter & cheerleader. Also, sometimes I would give advice to others but, wouldn’t take my own advice – I wonder why ? But, I learned to take my own advice just as much I give others advice.

BTW let me just tell you huntyyyy you’re such an amazing woman, what you’re doing for this month has been helpful to me + inspiring me to take care of me…, great post , love you sisss ❤️.

    1. Staceyyyyyy,
You’re so right! Putting myself first is taking care of me. Now there is a thin line between that and true selfish/self-absorbed people lol. I also felt like I gave great advice but it was hard to advise myself. But I realize if I had all the answers for me, I wouldn’t need anyone and thats not how God wired us. Thank you for reading! Love you! XOXO

  4. This was actually my favorite part of the series! Maybe that is because I can relate to it the most! Loved how you broke it all down and added some personal experiences lol. You definitely are right, we can’t forget to pour into ourselves to give God a return on his investment!

Your doing a amazing job! Keep up the good writing!

    1. I am guilty of forgetting to invest into me. Whether its taking a mental break, reading the Word, cooking healthier, exercising, whatever it is. I am making more of a conscious decision this year to do this. Thanks for the encouragement!
