I once had a student who came to see me for some debt management counseling. She had racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt. She wanted to be a doctor and the pre-med program was more expensive than she thought it would be. Now she had $212,020 in student loan debt and was completely freaking out.
I asked her, “Why did you choose this particular program?” and she answered, “Well initially I wanted to help people but honestly, I chose it because I wanted to make money.”
And there you have it.
If you want to fulfill purpose you have to change your focus and desires to God’s focus and desires.
Discovering the why behind what you do is crucial in determining whether you’re actually fulfilling purpose or not.
She lost her original focus and desire; instead of allowing her passion for helping people to compel her she started to get driven by her desire for money.
Ironically, what she desired became what she was drowning in.
What are your desires?
What are you focusing on?
What is your motive?
Purpose is always connected to people. If your focus, desire and motive have nothing to do with others, are you really walking in purpose?
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to grow or even in wanting to gain substantial income from fulfilling your purpose. But when that becomes your main focus, eventually you’ll lose sight of why you started in the first place.
Align your focus and desires according to the purpose God has created you for.
Allow pure motives to drive you to the finish line.

Great advice! As a new blogger and entrepreneur, I get so caught up in wanting to gain a large following and find ways of generating a second income that I lose focus. It’s important to not lose track of that. Thanks, I needed this!

Thanks for reading Alecia! It’s so hard, especially as a new blogger to get caught up in what’s seemingly happening for everyone else in the blogosphere. But if we lose our focus then the special IT factor we have doesn’t get contributed. So happy you enjoyed it. 🙂
