Back in the day, when I was young (insert crying face), I used to have this vision of myself on a stage. I was holding a mic in one hand and facing a crowd of people. This has been a reoccurring vision throughout my teens, 20s and 30s but that vision has become more and more focused as time has passed.
Although I started having this vision as a teenager, the ME that I was seeing was actually a grown woman. I had to become her.
The fifth thing that needs to change if you want to fulfill purpose…is YOU.
As humans we are constantly evolving. Our likes and dislikes evolve. Our physical bodies evolve (or dissolve, however you want to look at it lol). We all change; it’s inevitable.
Changing your mind, habits, focus and will are wonderful and will ignite some measure of change in who you are, but in order to fulfill the fullness of the purpose you were created for, you have to become.
The definition of become is “to grow to be; turn into, begin to be.”
I will never forget once when I was attending this college ministry. This elderly woman came up to me and said that I had been on her heart and she was praying for me. Then she said, “You need to be careful of what you’re saying about yourself. Your voice is powerful.” And at that moment I had a picture of that vision with me onstage with a mic in my hand. But then she goes, “No I’m not talking about your singing voice. I’m talking about your words. People will listen to that voice. There’s power in what you say.”
That conversation caused that vision to become a little clearer…and if I’m being honest, since I was basically told I was NOT going to be the next Beyoncé but something else that was even more terrifying, I ran from that for a loooonnnggg time.
Why? Because it wasn’t who I imagined. I was ready to rock my leotard and heels! But I had to let go of that idea of who I was to become.
Are you willing to let go of the image of who you think you should be? Are you willing to let go of what you think your purpose should look like?
Or are you willing to spend years attaining to a false identity and image, never becoming who you were truly meant to be.
I started becoming the woman I envisioned, day by day. With every challenge, with every failure and with every success, I was becoming.
Becoming is continual. There is no final destination point of purpose. You will never “arrive.” It’s a process where you’re constantly developing more and more into who your purpose needs you to be.
I feel like someone may read this and think, “But I like being me!” I like being me too! I love my weird sense of humor and funny facial expressions. But as I’m in this process of becoming, my “sense of humor” doesn’t sarcastically tear people down like it did in my teens. I still get to be my hilarious self but this hilarious self is the way God intended it to be.
Choose to do the hard work and become.
Become that entrepreneur who charts out their own lane and definition of success.
Become that creative director who doesn’t care about conforming to societies standards of beauty.
Become that coach who isn’t worried about the market being oversaturated because she knows she has something unique that someone needs.
Make a choice every day to do something where you’re becoming that person your purpose needs.

This was a really great read. Once you hit those 30’s, the need to evolve and be your best self is your drive and in the end the only thing that can change it and holding you back is you. Once you realize this, anything is possible!

This is so true! Something shifted when I turned 30. I think that’s where dissatisfaction comes in; when we don’t realize that we must evolve. Best comment ever 🙂

Awesome article. It can be tough to look in the mirror and recognize that change is necessary. But, purposeful transformation is synonymous with maturity and peace. Great job!!

It’s so crazy how at times we try to change the situations around us, our atmosphere or something else to get to where we’re going, but sometimes the one thing that needs to change is you. Growth needs to happen in order for God to allow the miraculous to happen!
Thank you for writing this post! Love you
